Voyage to Oslo

Sweden

The Orm in Sweden This time the gamble worked out a little better.
The visibility was good and the wind slowed down.
The Orm was in a busy part of the sea, though, and the crew had to keep a good watch all night.
At last, at 4:00 a.m., the Orm and his tired crew sailed safely into the harbour of Högenäs.
Not very much later the crew was awakened by a friendly harbour master who had prepared a Swedish welcoming breakfast - complete with the local press and TV.
Sometimes sailing a Viking ship was a distinct advantage, and sometimes...
It began to seem as though the Viking gods wanted to make the Orm ’s journey as difficult as possible.
Maybe they were settling some old quarrel with these modern Vikings.
Anyway, it was impossible to sail that day, but again the weather was better during the night, and so the Orm moved on to Halmstad.
The gods must have been incensed that the Orm had managed to sail, because the weather closed in again for a few days.
By now the Orm was behind schedule, and Henri asked the Dutch consul for some help.
The consul arranged to have the Orm transported over-land to Götenborg and when the ship arrived there it was still two days behind schedule.

The rest stop that had been scheduled for Götenborg was cancelled, and so was the stop planned for Bleket.
Instead, the crew sailed straight to Lysekil.
The weather hadn’t improved enough that you could call the sailing "quiet", but with the help of the many bays and the abundance of small islands the Orm made out well.

By the time the Orm reached Lysekil the hard wind had become a storm and sailing wasn’t possible anymore.
The Orm wasn’t the only ship to have trouble with the heavy weather, though.
An oil tanker had sunk off the Swedish coast and the oil was drifting toward Lysekil.
The Swedish navy made a frantic attempt to prevent the oil from reaching the coast, but the bad weather meant that success was unlikely.
The Orm had to try to leave the harbour before the oil arrived because neither the sail nor the 7,5 PK outboard engine would be able to move the Orm through the syrupy oil.
The following night, when the wind had "dropped" to a mere hard wind, the Orm stole out of the harbour like a thief in the night, and headed off for Fjällbacka.
The weather made it impossible for the Orm to follow the normal shipping routes, but this wasn’t a problem.
The Orm has no keel and only a slight draught, so he could sail in the protected shallow waters offered by the bays and small islands.
The next day the crew got to sail under normal weather conditions and the Orm called at Strömstad, the last Swedish port.
